The Philosophy of Love

love

Love is a profound, complex feeling that people have toward other human beings. It isn’t just a feeling of affection or fondness or attachment, though those are important aspects of it as well. It’s a special kind of interdependence that exists between humans, and it can involve many other things as well, including caring for and valuing one another, giving to each other, and sharing a lot of different emotions with one another.

A lot of people have a pretty general idea of what love is, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a ton of variation in how we talk about and experience it. Those who think of love as romantic or sexual attraction tend to focus on the pleasures of being in the presence of the person we’re in love with, but others can feel frustration, exasperation, and anger as well. It’s not even just about how we feel about our partner, but how we treat them as a whole person.

So it’s not surprising that when philosophers talk about love, they have a variety of ways to describe and explain it. It’s not so easy, however, to classify particular theories into a coherent group. This is partly because they often eschew explicit reductionistic language, and so they don’t seem to belong to any of the usual categories (like “emotion proper” or “love as union”).

Some of these theories try to make progress on this by focusing on how love affects our sense of self and our relationship to other people. For instance, some philosophers like Helm argue that when you love someone you end up identifying with them as the sort of person they are. In this way you come to share their values and interests, which sounds a lot like union accounts of love.

Other philosophers like the 20th-century rabbi Eliyahu Eliezer Dessler define love from a Jewish point of view as a kind of mutual bestowal that doesn’t rely on exchange or reciprocity. They also want to stress the importance of a relationship that’s grounded in trust.

There are a few problems with this approach, however. One is that it seems to make the argument for love rather weak. It depends on particular historical facts about a loving relationship to justify it, and these facts may be idiosyncratic and subjective.

In addition, it may be hard to see how this form of love can be justified in any general or universal way, since it relies on a kind of value that is intermediate between appraisal and bestowal and which can’t be generated by merely recognizing already existing value.

Dominoes – More Than Just a Game

domino

A domino is a rectangular block marked with a series of numbers on one side and blank or dotted on the other. Dominoes are like dice or playing cards in that they can be used to play a wide variety of games. The most popular domino game in the West involves placing a piece of the set edge to edge against another so that their adjacent sides are either identical or form some specified total, with the first player to do so scoring points.

When a domino is stood upright, it has potential energy (energy stored based on its position), and when the first domino falls, that energy is converted from potential to kinetic energy. This kinetic energy is transferred to each subsequent domino, propelling it into motion and potentially setting off a chain reaction that sees the whole set topple.

A similar principle applies to the work world, as discussed in the classic book Influence by Robert Cialdini. His key idea is that people are more likely to honor commitments and follow through on them if they perceive the benefit as being in line with their self-image. In a recent article, Forbes writer Daniel Schwab describes how his boss, the CEO of Domino’s Pizza, used this concept to help the company address its biggest problem: employee turnover.

Domino’s strategy was simple: rather than asking employees to do everything, the company asked them to choose their top task for the day and work on that until it was completed. Schwab believed that by making this the priority, and ensuring that it was followed through on, Domino’s would be in a better position to attract and retain the best talent in the industry.

There are many different ways to use a domino set, from simply lining up tiles in straight lines to creating grids that form pictures or 3D structures such as towers and pyramids. You can also create intricate pieces of domino art, combining the shapes and colors of individual dominoes to make patterns or portraits.

While the word domino is most often associated with a particular type of gaming device, it has an even older sense: the term was once used to describe a long hooded cloak worn by a priest over his surplice. This is suggested by the fact that the earliest dominoes were made with black pips on ivory faces, reminiscent of the color scheme of the hooded garment.

The most common domino sets contain 28 tiles, with each piece displaying either a number or a blank side. As the sets have grown larger, it’s become more difficult to distinguish between them by sight alone. This has led to the development of more standardized color schemes and the use of Arabic numerals to make identification easier. Larger sets are available that contain as many as 190 dominoes.

Feeling Stuck? Here’s How to Get Unstuck

stuck

Feeling stuck is a feeling that you know what needs to be done, but can’t seem to get there. It can be due to a lack of motivation, an unfulfilling job, or unsatisfying relationships. It’s a frustrating and often debilitating sensation that can impact your mental, physical, and emotional well-being.

Stuck is a common feeling that most people experience at some point in their lives. Some people even say they’re “stuck in a rut” or that they’re “going through the motions.” They may also feel like they’re stuck in a particular stage of life, such as being an adult, or a certain age.

If you’re feeling stuck in your current life, there are many ways to overcome it. One way is to seek the help of a therapist. Therapists can help individuals to identify why they are stuck and work through the emotions, feelings, and situations that led them to where they are today. They can also help them to come up with strategies that can help them move forward and get unstuck.

There are some situations that can make you feel stuck, such as having a poop stuck halfway out of your anal canal. This can be very uncomfortable and embarrassing, but doesn’t always indicate a serious problem. Some cases of poop getting stuck in the anal canal can be caused by constipation, while others can be related to medical conditions or medications that you’re taking.

Another example of being stuck is having a globus pharyngeus, or a feeling that something is stuck in your throat. This can happen for a variety of reasons, but is typically caused by eating something that irritates the lining of your esophagus. It can be very uncomfortable, especially if the globus is constantly rubbing against your trachea. It can also be a sign of an underlying issue, such as acid reflux disease or throat cancer.

You can also be stuck if you have an anxiety disorder, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). When you’re suffering from OCD, you might feel a persistent thought, concept, or melody that won’t go away. It’s like a squeaky hamster wheel in the background that you can’t turn off. It’s in your mind all day and night and won’t stop until you force it to.

When crushed between two objects, muscle cells die instantly because of three mechanisms that occur in the body: lysis, ischemia, and vascular compromise. The pressure exerted on the cells from the crushing causes a build-up of lactic acid, which then leads to cell death. This is why it’s so important to remove an object that has become stuck in the anal canal as soon as possible.

Stuck thoughts are usually signs of elevated stress and fatigue. Making a big deal about them will only keep them going, so try to ignore them instead of worrying about them. This will reduce your stress and eliminate the stuck thought. Alternatively, you can distract yourself by engaging in a repetitive activity such as chewing gum, which is known to eliminate earworms for some people.

A Beginner’s Guide to Poker

poker

Poker is a card game where the goal is to form the highest-ranking hand at the end of each betting round. The player who does so wins the pot – the sum of all bets placed by the players in that particular hand. Poker is a game of strategy that requires quick instincts. The more you play and observe other players, the better you’ll become at reading your opponents. This will help you win more hands.

In addition to being a fun game, poker can be a great way to make money. In fact, many people have made a good living playing poker! However, if you want to be successful in the game, it’s important to understand some of the basic rules. There are some common mistakes that even advanced players make, and it’s essential to know how to avoid them.

A basic strategy in poker is to bluff with your weakest hands, and to raise bets with your best ones. You can also improve your chances of winning by making a solid pair or four of a kind. But if you’re not careful, you could lose a lot of money. That’s why it’s so important to watch videos of the pros and learn from their mistakes.

The game begins with each player placing a forced bet, called an ante or blind bet. The dealer then shuffles the cards, cuts them and deals them to the players one at a time, starting with the player on their left. Once everyone has their cards, the first of what may be several betting rounds starts.

Once all the players have raised enough to match the amount of the largest raise, or folded their cards, the flop is dealt. The flop is three cards face up on the table. Each player then compares their own two cards to the flop, and any other cards on the board that they need to make their final hand.

Poker is a game of luck, but if you play smart and avoid some of the common mistakes, you can make a steady income from this popular card game. Just don’t be tempted to take the game too seriously by disrespecting dealers or complaining about bad beats – everyone gets them!

There are lots of different ways to play poker, and each has its own advantages. Some players prefer to develop a strategy by reading books, while others find it more helpful to analyze their own games and the hands they’ve played. Some players even discuss their strategies with other players to get a more objective look at their own strengths and weaknesses. Whichever approach you take, be sure to constantly tweak your strategy so that it’s as effective as possible. Good luck!
