When you’re in love, you want to do anything you can to be with your beloved. It could mean moving in together, starting a family, or supporting one another while building a career. It might also mean anything that will help your relationship progress. But when you’re in love, you may be tempted to overlook your partner’s negative traits.
Psychologists have defined love in many ways. It’s not always about physical or sexual attraction, but about the way we experience the world. For example, we may feel love for the color of a flower, a beautiful landscape, or the taste of a certain food. We can also feel love for an unspecified object, or a creative project.
While some philosophers have tried to define love from a philosophical perspective, their accounts have been quite limited. Most have focused on personal love, although Frankfurt (1999) has developed a more general view of love. Moreover, this view is difficult to categorize because many of the concepts that are central to love are overlapped.
While the basic definition of love is that it’s a basic human emotion, researchers have disagreed about whether it’s an emotion or a social behavior. Some psychologists suggest that love is a physiological drive that can only be expressed through emotion, while others suggest that love is an action. For example, Paul Ekman, a famous researcher on the nature of emotions, says that love is an emotion, and that it should manifest itself in an individual’s facial expression and physical behavior.
In classical Greek philosophy, love was considered to be a distinct mode of valuing one’s companion. Hence, agape was a form of altruism, while ludus was a playful affection. Similarly, pragma was a commitment that was long-established. In addition to these, there was storge, a loyal bond between siblings, and mania.
Love is a complex, multi-faceted emotion. In fact, it’s so difficult to explain, we may be able to describe it in a few words. The most common definition of love is “a strong liking for someone or something”. In this case, love is the opposite of hatred. Love is difficult to define, but its presence is universal. Love can be the most intense emotion.
