As the video game industry continues to expand, the question of what exactly a game is remains an ongoing one. Whether that be the debate over what qualifies as “art” (or even what constitutes “game play”) or how video games affect our well-being, this is a topic of intense interest to scholars, players, and anyone interested in the medium. While it is possible to define a game by its various components, such as rules, challenges and interaction, the definition of “game” itself is ultimately in the eye of the beholder. The term has often been cited as a kind of creative expression, entertainment or art, but it can also be considered work (such as professional sports), or function as an educational, simulational or psychological tool.
Historically, many types of games have been defined by their components: board games have boards, card games have cards, dice have dice, and video games use a display to present the player with decisions. But it is also possible to make a game without any of these conventional elements, and this includes games that require little skill or luck, such as children’s games like Candy Land and Chutes and Ladders. In fact, some of these games may be considered to not even be a game by some scholars, who would say that games are only a game if the player makes decisions that can impact the outcome.
To be “game” is to be willing to do something new, unusual or risky. This could include a sports competition, a dangerous hike or even a romantic relationship. In some cases, people are able to find the courage to do something “game” only by reminding themselves that it could be a lot worse.
The word game is also used to describe wild animals that are hunted and eaten for sport or food, or a game of chance. People who are good marksmen, or naturals at shooting, are often said to be “game”.
Finally, a game can also refer to the activity of playing a video or computer game. In a recent study, researchers found that when people were able to measure their own engagement with a video game, experiences of autonomy, competence and relatedness positively predicted subjective well-being, while extrinsic motivations negatively predicted it.
It can be difficult to define what a game is, but it is important that we are able to do so for several reasons. One of the most important is that a game is interactive, which sets it apart from other forms of entertainment, such as film, music or television. Another reason is that games allow us to practice making decisions, which we must do in our everyday lives. The ability to make good choices can help us become happier, more fulfilled and productive members of society. Finally, games are a form of entertainment that can be enjoyed by people from all walks of life, and so can provide a way for socially awkward or introverted people to interact with each other in an accepting and safe environment.
